The city of Jaipur on Saturday made it to the list of World Heritage Sites of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The announcement came during the 43rd session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Azerbaijan.

The committee is examining 35 nominations for inscription on the World Heritage Sites list during the session, which began on June 30 and will conclude on July 10.

Fourteen of the 35 sites have been inscribed on the list so far, including seven on Saturday. The other sites that were inscribed on the list on Saturday along with Jaipur are located in Australia, Bahrain, China, Indonesia, Japan and Laos.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was glad that Jaipur had been recognised as a World Heritage Site. “Jaipur is a city associated with culture and valour. Elegant and energetic, Jaipur’s hospitality draws people from all over,” Modi said in a tweet.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot congratulated the residents of Jaipur and said: “It is a matter of great pride that our Pink City Jaipur has been declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO. It will add to the glory of capital city of Rajasthan.”

“This new inscription is an exceptional example of interchange of ancient Hindu, Mughal and contemporary western ideas in town planning and architecture,” Eric Falt, director and UNESCO representative in India, said.

Jaipur, the capital of the state of Rajasthan in India was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, a Kachwaha (Suryavanshi/ claiming descent from the sun) Rajput. Initially his capital was Amber, which lies at a distance of 11 km from Jaipur. He felt the need of shifting his capital city owing to growing population and scarcity of water. Jaipur is the first planned city of India and the King took great interest in designing the city.

Keeping in mind the several battles fought with the Marathas, Jai Singh was keen on making his city safe and secure. This is why the construction of the city was brilliantly planned and executed. The architecture of the city was certainly ahead of its time and was perhaps the best and the most advanced, at that time, in the Indian subcontinent.

In 1878, when Prince of Wales visited Jaipur, the whole city was painted in Pink color to welcome him and after that Jaipur was titled ‘Pink City’. The neat and broadly laid-out avenues, painted in pink provide a magical charm to the city even now. Jaipur is rich in its cultural and architectural beauty, which can be traced in the various historical and aesthetic places that reside in the city. This city of victory really wins the hearts of the people with its splendid charisma.
